Dussehra,
like Diwali, celebrates Lord Rama’s defeat over Ravana. People process in
the streets with beautiful shrines devoted to Rama. On Vijayadasmi day, the
tenth day of Dussehra, large models of Ravana, his son Meghnath, and his
brother Kumbhkarna are placed in open spaces within the villages. The shrine
of Rama shoots fire at Ravana and his family while the crowd roars with
encouragement. Before this ritual is practiced, the goddess, Durga,
must bless the Lord. The people must put out the evil within
them using the idea of karma, their deeds of virtue and
goodness. The idols of Durga are worshipped throughout the country. Durga is
called ‘Shakti’. She represents a cosmic energy within all
living creatures, and a power and strength in the battle between good versus
evil.
In some area of India people fast during this event.
In other areas, the women dance around carrying clay lamps and singing songs
of devotion to their goddess. Plays from Hindu mythology are performed.
The citizens prepare dolls displayed on steps filled with flowers and lights.
